Video: Watch Chris Cornell's mashup cover of 'One'
Chris Cornell intended to cover U2's "One", but when he came across lyrics to Metallica's song of the same title he landed on a mashup cover.
Now approaching four years since he died, Chris Cornell is regarded as one of the best rock front men of recent times (Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog). But he has quite a set of cover songs, which he often did as a solo performer. My favorite has to be the cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean.” Check it out here.
According to Revolver Magazine, Cornell set out to do a cover of U2’s “One.” In researching the full lyrics, the lyrics for Metallica’s “One” came up. As he explained to an audience in Reading, Pennsylvania in 2013, he decided to combine the two. More specifically, as you can hear below, he used Metallica’s lyrics over U2’s music. Tell me what you think of it in the comments. I think it’s interesting, and sneaky good.
