On This Day: Guns N'Roses debut album is released
On July 21, 1987 Guns N' Roses record-setting debut, Appetite For Destruction, was released.
In 1987, love it or hate it, hair metal dominated the rock roost and others who ruled the charts (U2, Def Leppard) were quite polished. Guns N’ Roses would be the antithesis of all that, and Appetite For Destruction was their debut declaration of it. On July 21, 1987, what would become the best-selling debut album of all-time regardless of genre (30 million units sold worldwide) was released.
Fast forward to……say, July or August of 1996. With a litany of music cassettes of general age and wear, a 16-year old kid knew well of Guns N’ Roses and liked a lot of their songs. He had gotten a paycheck or two from his first job by this point, and happened upon a local Best Buy. Appetite For Destruction was the first CD I ever bought.
There’s a litany of well-known G N’ R songs on Appetite ("Welcome To The Jungle", "Paradise City", "Sweet Child O’ Mine", "Mr. Brownstone"). But I like a deeper cut, ''You’re Crazy". The acoustic version, which I’ve included here, was featured on 1988’s G N’ R Lies. Be aware of some NSFW work language.
